Hinomaru

For Wieden+Kennedy Japan, initiated and designed by Joseph Ernst, we made a modern browser interpretation of the Japanese flag, the Nissh?ki or Hinomaru. Four different colour circles composite a bright red sun when overlapping.
The coherence and movement of the circles are based on a constantly updated RSS feed with measurements of recent seismic activity in the Tokyo area.

The project, sadly, fell through when the project manager left W+K, but you can still visit it here[+] and click the circles to make a donation.

Hinomaru - Japan relieve project with Joseph Ernst

The main graphics were made with Canvas and javascript with a fallback to VML.
During the process Firefox pulled their support for the "darker" graphic composite due to inconsistent browser implementations and we had to fall back to flash as a second display fallback.
